Portland, ME - Gordon Rae Johnson, 61, passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 3, 2019.
The third of ten children, Gordon was born on July 23, 1957, in Machias, Maine, to Gail Johnson St Jock, a homemaker and housekeeper, and Ernest Johnson Sr., a tractor-trailer driver. The family resided in Machias for a short time before relocating to Portland, when Gordon was still young. He attended Portland schools.
Gordon worked for a long period of time at Urchant Merchant, and took great pride in his job as foreman. He also worked as a professional painter and could wield a roller like no other. Gordon loved working with his brother Fred before his passing, and then most recently with his nephews, who paint and roof together.
Though he had a tough exterior, a gentle, caring man lay beneath. He showed his appreciation to those that took time to get to know him. His family meant the world to him, and he enjoyed spending time with them, most frequently his nephews Fred Jr. and George with whom he lived with for a period of time. He loved to play pool and darts. He was great at woodworking and could make beautiful pieces. He also enjoyed watching action movies in his down time.
He is predeceased by his first wife, Lorraine Jonson, father Ernest C. Johnson Sr., step-father Neil St, Jock, brother, Frederick C. Johnson Sr., and sister Iris Pelletier.
Gordon is survived by his ex-wife, Marion Johnson, of Standish, son Dominic Johnson, of Westbrook, step-sons Leo Smith, of Charlotte, NC, Billy Joe Smith , of , Standish, daughter Antoinette Smith and husband Rolle, of Waldoboro, granddaughters Rose Curtis, Jennifer Benner, and twins Kathy & Karen Smith. He is also survived by his mother Gail St. Jock, of Westbrook, sisters Cheryl Hall & husband Brian, of Buxton, Darlene Thurlow & husband Thomas, of Windham, Kim Mercier & husband Skip, of Wesley, Lisa Gray, of Portland, Sue Johnson, of Buxton, brothers, Ernest Johnson Jr. & partner Esther Chaney, of Scarborough, Wendal "Tex" Johnson, of Westbrook, and multiple nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will take place on August 4, 2019, from 12 - 5 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 17 Dunn Street, Westbrook. Please join the family in celebrating the life of Gordon Rae Johnson.
