Hollis ME - Charles Frederick Maggs, of Hollis, passed away on May 23, 2019 at the age of 90. He was born in Rochester, NY, on Jan. 12, 1929.
Charlie was the adopted son of Charles F and Clara S Maggs of Greece, NY, a suburb of Rochester, where he attended school.
In 1946, at the age of 17, Charlie enlisted in the United States Army where he ranked as a Sergeant and served as a cook, in Korea, between WWII and the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1948. He was very proud to be a veteran and to have served his country.
He later graduated from Alfred University, in Alfred NY, with a degree in Agriculture Science and was the Vice President of the AG-Tech Senior Class.
His first marriage was to Virginia Knox with whom he fathered two sons, John and Steven. In 1960 he married Nancy Ann Allen becoming step father to a son Greg and a daughter Leslie, and father to a daughter Amanda and a son Marc.
In later years, he owned a successful garbage business in Brockport, NY. He also held a position testing soil for lime content at different farms. Charlie went on to hold many more jobs throughout his lifetime which included, but was not limited to, a Radio Announcer, Door to Door Salesman in early years, and then went on to become a long distance Truck driver and Limousine Chauffeur. Charlie received an award for being the oldest to retire from his company.
Charlie is remembered lovingly as an extremely kind-hearted, happy-go-lucky guy with a great singing voice and a ready joke. When out to dinner, and dancing with Nancy, he would often take the microphone and sing her love songs. Apart from his casual singing, he was an active member of The Downeasters Barbershop Harmony Chorus, in Rochester, which was ranked one of the top ten in the nation one year, and he was also a member of other Barbershop Quartets in NY and Maine for many years.
He was truly a great family man and was well respected by his friends and colleagues in the business world. All who knew Charlie knew that his passions in life were his family, meeting people, and singing. He was very outgoing; striking up a conversation with complete strangers, and then many of them, becoming his life-long friends. His many songs and great memories will remain in the hearts of everyone he met.
Charlie was predeceased by his parents, C. Frederick and Clara S. Maggs; his wife Nancy Maggs, daughter, Amanda Maggs, and son, John DeMott.
