Arthur "Art" M. Stevens

North Yarmouth, ME - Arthur “Art” M. Stevens, Jr., of North Yarmouth, Maine, passed away on Monday, April 2, 2018, following a lengthy illness.  His loving family was at his side throughout his brief stay at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough, ME.

He was born on November 30, 1939, the son of the late Arthur M. Stevens, Sr., and Blanch E. (MacDonald) Stevens of Eastport, Maine.

Art was a 1958 graduate of Shead Memorial High School, in Eastport, Maine. Upon graduation from high school, Art enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and continued his military career with a subsequent enlistment in the U.S. Coast Guard. In 1975, he joined the Maine Air National Guard, Bangor, ME, and was selected as part of the initial cadre as an in-flight air refueling technician (aka boom operator), conducting worldwide air refueling missions. In 1997, he retired as a MSGT with over 30 years of military service.

While remaining deeply devoted to military service in the Guard, he simultaneously built a successful career in human services counseling. His early experiences as a counselor with the Rural Youth Corps, Maine Indian Education, AFL-CIO, and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Associates lead him to establish his own statewide practice, Stevens Training Employment and Placement Services (STEPS) in Yarmouth, Maine, as a vocational rehabilitation counselor and facilitator. Art always believed in the importance of education, "blossom where you’re planted and it’s never too late to complete a goal." At the age of 60, he proudly earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Southern New Hampshire University.

Art was an avid golfer, an enthusiastic cribbage player and enjoyed his weekly poker games with friends.  He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren on many occasions at family gatherings, sporting events, and times at the lake.

Art is survived by his loving wife of 40 years, Denise Bremner Stevens of North Yarmouth, his sons Arthur M. Stevens, III, (wife Lisa) of East Waterboro; Kevin Stevens (wife Patricia) of Biddeford; Michael Stevens (wife Laura) of Cibolo,Texas and his daughter Shannon Stevens of Cape Elizabeth.  He also leaves two sisters, Nadine Whalen (husband Tom) of Fitchburg, Massachusetts and Sonja Fongemie (husband Dan) of North Fort Myers, Florida, one brother Kevin Stevens (wife Elaine) of Whiting, and one sister-in-law, Judie Stevens (Harry) of Whiting. Art is also survived by twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Arthur was predeceased by brothers Harry Stevens, David Stevens and wife Dorothy, Richard Stevens and wife Kayona, sister Joanne Brotheim and husband Jerry, granddaughter Ashley Stevens and former spouse Carolyn Mahar.

At Arthur’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.  A celebration of Arthur’s life will be held at the Amvets Hall, 148 North Rd, Yarmouth, Maine, on Saturday June 9, 2018, 1:00 to 4:00pm.  Military Honors will be rendered at 2:00pm.

In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Arthur are encouraged to make a donation to Habitat for Humanity.

Art’s sense of humor, quick wit, caring heart and generous spirit will be missed.

Mrs. Stevens and family - my deepest sympathy. I had the pleasure of having several chats with Art while he was pursuing his degree at SNHU. I was the Center Director at the time and will never forget his dedication to his studies. I feel blessed to have known him during that time and will never forget his kind nature and warm smile. Art always treated everyone at the center with utmost respect. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Art and family, Our prayers and heartfelt condolences go out to your family for the loss of your dad. He was such a gentleman when I met him at the golf course or on the softball diamond while growing up in Calais. He truly made a lasting impression on me as a youth. May you always hold fond memories of your times together. The Kelleys

I got to know Art when he was a member at Toddy Brook Golf Course and will always remember his warm and friendly smile and welcoming nature. He enjoyed bringing his grandaughter by to play golf and we would chat over lunch. He was a wonderful man and will truly be missed. All of us at Toddy Brook send our heartfelt sympathy to you and your family. May your many memories help you through this difficult time.

I remember many local missions and trips with Art in the tanker. Always the professional, great attitude, sense of humor... offloading gas to the receivers, caring for the cargo in the back... haven't seen him in years though. Thoughts and prayers for his family. Salute.

So sorry to learn of Art's passing.

Art was an integral professional aircrew member as a "boomer" for the Maine Air National Guard. We had many refueling missions, as well as transporting guard members and aircrew all over the world on flights in the KC-135. Art was a fun boomer to fly with. Rest in Peace big guy!

Dear Denise, Mike and family. Sorry for your loss. I got to enjoy many hours with Art flying around the world with him in the MeAng. As you know he was a very competitive golfer and really enjoyed whipping on me at the course. Bless you all. Ed St. Heart & Sue
