Richard C. Nielsen

Old Orchard Beach, ME - Richard C. Nielsen, 71, Born March 10, 1946 who was married to Ellen Jane (Pooler) Nielsen, passed away peacefully at his home in Old Orchard Beach on Thursday, January 25, 2018.

Richard was born in Portland, ME at what was then called Maine General Hospital.  He was born to Alfred C. Nielsen and Florence Mae (Ray) Nielsen in Scarborough.  He was the youngest of three children.  He went to Scarborough and South Portland Schools.  He dropped out of school and took an apprenticeship at Broadway Auto Body to learn the art of Automotive Repairs.

Richard met his wife, Ellen Jane Pooler, in the fall of 1968 while she worked at her father's convenience store on Broadway in South Portland.  They were married on May 3, 1969 in South Portland, ME.  They lived in South Portland when they were first married and later moved to Scarborough and lived there for 43 years.  They had 4 children together.

After working at several body shops and mastering his craft, he opened in own business, Dick's Auto Body and Paint on the Payne Road in Scarborough.  He opened the business there in 1978.  He worked on all kinds of cars and quite often if a customer didn't have enough to pay their bill he would work out a barter system of some kind.  Many of his later customers would tell him that their parents had been his clients earlier in his career.  He worked on all kinds of vehicles but as technology got more involved, he moved his expertise to mostly rust repair.  He was diagnosed with lung cancer in March of 2014 and was forced to retire as he could no longer handle the long hours.

Richard enjoyed working on cars, having fun with his children, and eventually grandchildren.  He enjoyed camping, friends, going for Sunday rides, campfires, and going to the races at Beech Ridge.  He would eventually succumb to his lung cancer.

Survivors include his wife, Ellen of almost 49 years who was the love of his life.  He is predeceased by both of his parents and his sister, Geneva.  He is survived by his brother David and his wife Debbie of Machiasport, Maine.  His four children: son Richard and his fiance Geneva of South Portland, son Scott and his wife Laurie of Biddeford, daughter Sonja of Old Orchard Beach, and son Eric and his wife Kathy of Standish.  He also has 5 grandchildren, Kylie and Morgan of Mechanic Falls, Madison and Nicholas of Biddeford, and Lily of Old Orchard Beach.

A celebration of life will be held Friday, February 2, 2018 at the Elks Lodge, 68 Ocean Park Road, Saco, ME from 4 – 7 p.m.

Richard was a wonderful and kind man. H was all about helping people, and he was a master craftsman at what he did. I will always remember the pride he took in his work, the way he prioritized people over material things, and his love for his family--and his dog! :) I am so happy to have known him, and I am praying for you Ellen and the "kids"; I know it is a really hard loss!
