Cheryl A. Nanos

FALMOUTH, ME - Cheryl Ann Nanos passed away at home on August 19, 2017, following a courageous three-month battle with a glioblastoma brain tumor. She was born January 21, 1951, to Jane (Hodgdon) and Frank J. Nanos in Westbrook, Maine. Cheryl graduated from Deering High School in 1969, and completed post-secondary studies at USM. As a young girl, she enjoyed the friendship and travel of both the Portland Assembly #1 Order of the Rainbow for girls and the Corner Stone chapter.

A highly imaginative and witty mind guided Cheryl throughout life. Smiling, singing, and dancing with Portland Co-Opera, Lyric Theatre, and the Woodfords Congregational Church choir, she put her talents into her work and volunteer environments — including Woodfords Church boards and committees. Perhaps the capital campaign fundraising, including reconstruction of the church’s Wicks Organ, was a favorite moment.

The art departments and production management for various print shops (Casco Print, Seavey Printers, Union Mutual’s print shop) were home to Cheryl’s many skills in the graphic arts field. This Yankee girl even went south to Columbia, SC for UNUM/Colonial Life in the late 90s for a two-year stint to set up a new print/mail distribution center there. Cheryl’s L.L. Bean career began in 2001, as a Senior Supervisor in Distribution. She was promoted to Assistant Manager, Distribution Operations in 2012; in 2014, she joined L.L. Bean Security as Operations Manager.

Cheryl’s unique gift was her ability to inspire people to always reach higher, to listen to one another, and work together. Quick with a joke and a smile, her earthly presence will be missed by many friends, co-workers, family, and animals. We’re sure Cheryl and her horse Buster are now together trotting through lush green fields.

Cheryl leaves behind her partner Julie Motherwell; sister Pam Barrows; brother Paul Nanos, niece Rebecca Barrows and her partner Tommy Bailey, and grandniece Madison; nephew David Nanos; and fabulous neighbors and friends who stepped up to help Cheryl’s life changes be easier ones.

We are especially grateful to the VNA Home Health Hospice professionals, and to Theresa Gray and Brandi Greene of ‘The Girls at Home Care’ for their gentle caring of Cheryl as she neared her final journey.

As Cheryl requested, there will be no public services.

We loved Cheryl! When I first met Cheryl as a much younger guy, we seemed to click immediately - apparently we had the same odd sense of humor as we quickly laughed ourselves into hysterics...and my Mom asked us to leave the dinner table!
Cheryl was a loving & compassionate person, quick to smile, share a story or joke, and gave great hugs! Heaven is now blessed with an very awesome angel.
Our prayers & very sincere sympathies to you Julie, and family.
Lots of love,
Mike & Staci Motherwell

This was incredibly sad for me to learn. Seems like I just saw her at Hannafords. Loved Cheryl and the angelic presence that glowed from her in every interaction. She was all heart and compassion yet had that fire when she needed it. I'll miss seeing her around about town. So so sad... Thinking of her and her family.

Julie, my heart goes out to you at this difficult time. Cheryl was such a lovely person and I enjoyed working with both of you on one very interesting project (Customax in '85-'86). You both helped me perfect my job and finish with winning products. This is such a loss for you, Julie, and for her family. You both are in my thoughts and prayers.

With deepest condolences,
Carolyn Corliss

It was such an honor to know and work with Cheryl. Her kindness and gentleness will be with me always. We loved talking about our horses. She was a kindred spirit. Run wild and free Cheryl.

What a wonderful friend Cheryl was over the 25 years we knew each other! She was such a steady, helpful, and wonderfully witty presence in my life, and someone who loved singing, too. I will sorely miss her. My best wishes to you, Julie, Pam and all her family. May your happy memories of this dear person bring you comfort.

I'm so sorry to hear of Cheryl's passing. I enjoyed working with her at UNUM. She was always helpful and generously shared her expertise. There was never a hidden agenda or political game going on. When we transferred to South Carolina I enjoyed spending time with her outside of the office, exploring our new surroundings. My sincere condolences to all who will be missing her and her beautiful smile..
