Muriel (Spring) Lovejoy

Portland, ME - Muriel Spring Lovejoy passed away on July 23, 2017 at her Portland home, in the loving care of her daughter, son-in-law, and granddaughters.

She was born July 30, 1929, in Keene, New Hampshire, the daughter of Gladys Ethel Carey Spring and Silas Mortimer Spring. She was the thirteenth of fourteen children.  Newspaper clippings from her hometown newspaper reported her early success as a champion swimmer.

She married Willis H. Lovejoy on May 22, 1948 in Keene.  After several years living in Central Maine, they settled in the Portland area where they raised their family and Muriel pursued a career in banking with Portland Savings Bank and Biddeford Savings Bank.  In 1970, she was elected president of the Portland Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.  At the age of 50, she entered college, earning her bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Southern Maine in 1982.  With her degree in hand, she went to work for R.J. Grondin & Sons as an accountant.  After retiring, she worked seasonally for LL Bean.  One Christmas season, she dutifully took credit card information to complete the order of a southern gentleman and discovered she was speaking to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter!

She was a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Church on Congress Street and was an active volunteer at the Preble Street Chapel. Like many Mainers, she was a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox and took great pleasure in watching the Sox win two World Championships.

Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by her family.  She is survived by a daughter Rebecca Lovejoy Kees and her husband Gerald, of Lakeland, Florida; grandchildren Jennifer Dyer Goodwin and her husband Jeffery, Christopher Dyer, Amy Gallant Foelsche and her husband Karl, and Holly Gallant Wilson and her husband Charles; great-grandchildren Erik Goodwin, Morgan Goodwin, Sarah Wilson, Hannah Wilson, Dia Foelsche, and Jack Foelsche; and a sister Betty Spring Caron.  She was predeceased by her husband Willis and a daughter Barbara Lovejoy Dyer.

A private service will be held later this summer. Friends and family may honor the memory of Muriel S. Lovejoy by sending a gift to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 42040, Oklahoma City, OK  73123 or by going online to www.cancer.org.
