Carlton F. Snow

Yarmouth, ME - Carlton F. Snow, 86, passed away peacefully on Sept. 27, 2018 at home in Yarmouth, Maine.


Carl was born on April 4, 1932 to Sally Ramsey Snow and Carl A. Snow. After graduating from Deering High School (Class of 1950) he attended Portland Jr. College for a short time prior to enlisting in the Navy. It was during this time he met his beloved wife Phebe and began his career at IBM. Phebe and Carl were married on January 31, 1959 and moved to Kingston NY. They enjoyed 58 years together, living in NY, VA, CT as Carl took on a succession of positions within IBM.


Carl was a problem solver in all aspects of his life. At IBM he started in field service but soon found his true calling in computer programming, helping develop information systems for major corporate and government clients. Carl continued programming even after retirement, working as a small business consultant, offering database design services.


A lifelong athlete, he ran eight marathons, hiked hundreds of miles, and skied weekly well into his early eighties. Carl was also an avid hobbyist who enjoyed building remote controlled cars, trucks, and boats.


In his retirement, Carl worked at Ace Hardware where he enjoyed helping others find that one special part that would make their project a success. He also greatly enjoyed trading stories at the “Liars Table,” a group of friends who would meet regularly for breakfast and conversation at the Mall.


Throughout his life Carl loved being at a family cabin known as  “The Camp” each summer, sharing stories and good times with his immediate and extended families, including his children, siblings, cousins, and aunts and uncles.


Carl was predeceased by his wife, Phebe, and a sister, Katherine. He is survived by his daughter Lydia and husband Greg of Readfield and grandchildren Casey Leimbach, Michael (Diana)  Leimbach, and Sandra (Russell) Bayreuther;  his son Edward and wife Kathy and grandchildren Charlotte and Laura of Carlsbad, CA; three great-grandchildren;  his sisters Francis and Sara and his brother, Stephen.


Private services will be held at a later date.
