Westbrook, ME - Nancy Ellen Herlihy, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on September 4, 2018 at the age of 76. Nancy was born on March 25, 1942 in Camden, Maine, the daughter of Lenora and George Davis. Nancy lived in Thomaston until she was 14 when her mother passed away. She moved to Portland to live with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and Martin Ney, and their four children and was raised as part of the family. Nancy graduated from Saint Joseph’s Academy in Portland in 1960. She moved to Boston and graduated from Boston City Hospital as a registered nurse in 1963.
Nancy found great purpose and pleasure in her career and worked in many hospitals in the Boston area including Mass. Eye and Ear, Boston City Hospital, and Beverly Hospital. She also worked in nursing homes and for private patients and formed compassionate relationships in each setting where she worked. At the end of her three decade career, she also enjoyed her work for the Massachusetts Peer Review Organization, both as a reviewer and manager.
Nancy was a loving mother to her two children, Kerry and Ryan, and a loyal and thoughtful friend to many people. Her greatest joy was her only granddaughter, Saoirse. She spent many hours sewing, cooking, and painting with Saoirse as a young girl and instilled within her a love for the creative arts, as well as a taste for Thai food and pedicures. Nancy also was a passionate animal lover and an advocate for rescue animals and always lived with at least two animals in her adult life.
Nancy enjoyed making clothes and jackets, especially if they included sequins and feathers. She also enjoyed quilting, painting, and crossword puzzles. She liked to make pillowcases to donate to local cancer centers and hospitals to brighten up the patients’ rooms. She was a proud and active member of the United Church of Christ, in Naples, Florida and then later at First Parish Church in Gorham.
She is survived by her two children, Kerry and Ryan and her granddaughter, Saoirse, of Gorham; her former husband and father of her two children, Frank Herlihy of Naples, Florida; her sister, Barbara Lyons of Scarborough; and her special cousins, Jack Ney and his wife Maureen of Portland; Lenny Ney and his wife Belinda of Cape Elizabeth; Elizabeth Williams and her husband James of West Bath.
There will be a private service at First Parish Church in Gorham later in the fall.
